Zano is a next-generation privacy L1 blockchain built by the founder of CryptoNote, offering default privacy, hidden staking, and cross-chain bridging.
$ZANO : Review📜
What if the man who literally invented the privacy technology behind Monero decided that wasn't good enough and built something better from scratch?
Meet Zano, an open-source Layer-1 blockchain where every transaction is private by default. Not opt-in. Not a mixer. Protocol-enforced confidentiality on amounts, addresses, and asset types. World's first Proof-of-Stake with hidden amounts. Confidential Assets for private token issuance. A trustless cross-chain bridge that gives Bitcoin and Ethereum Zano-level privacy. Built by the CryptoNote creator. No VC. No ICO. Fair launch. The private economy that crypto was supposed to be.
Let's explore how Zano is building the financial privacy layer the world needs. 👇
⚪ Zano at a Glance
Zano is an open-source layer-1 blockchain where every transaction is private by default. Amounts, addresses, and even asset types are hidden. This is enforced at the protocol level, not opt-in.
The $ZANO token powers all network operations: private transfers, staking, gas fees, Confidential Asset issuance, and Ionic Swaps. The network uses a hybrid PoW/PoS consensus, with a full PoS transition planned via Hard Fork 7 in 2026.
Marketplace Insight: With Confidential Layer live since February 2026 and Hard Fork 6 introducing Gateway Addresses for trustless native ZANO bridging to EVM, Solana, and TON, Zano is solving its hardest problem: exchange and DeFi accessibility. Native ZANO has been rejected by several tier-1 exchanges due to default privacy, but the wZANO model (transparent, ERC-20, backed 1:1) opens a Coinbase fiat on-ramp via Base.
With Bitcoin and Ethereum's combined multi-trillion market cap and FCMP++ on the horizon to expand anonymity sets from 15 to millions, the potential for capital flowing into Zano-level privacy is significant. In a world of increasing surveillance and regulatory overreach, protocol-level privacy isn't a feature. It's a necessity.
⚪ Mission
Zano's mission is to build a private economy, not just private payments. Zano's lead developer Andrey Sabelnikov wrote the original CryptoNote reference implementation, the codebase that Monero and hundreds of other projects forked from. Zano is his next evolution of that work, built from scratch with a wider scope. The vision: a blockchain where confidentiality is the default, tokens are as private as the native coin, swaps reveal nothing, and stakers don't expose their balances. Financial privacy as a fundamental right, enforced by mathematics.
🔵 A Brief History
Between 2012 and 2014, Sabelnikov, along with Nicolas van Saberhagen, developed CryptoNote (also known as Bytecoin), the first privacy-coin protocol, which later became the foundation for Monero, MobileCoin, Safex Cash, and hundreds of other cryptocurrencies.
Andrey graduated from Saint Petersburg State University of Aerospace Instrumentation as a system programming engineer. He spent eight years in antivirus development, culminating in a high-profile lawsuit with Microsoft. Post-settlement, he became the lead developer for CryptoNote.
After the launch of Bytecoin, Sabelnikov left the project and focused on improving the original CryptoNote protocol, and in 2014 he launched Boolberry. Boolberry served as a testing ground for new privacy upgrades, particularly improvements to the consensus layer.
Building on the lessons learned from Boolberry, new work began in 2015 which later became Zano, refining the protocol's consensus layer from pure PoW to a hybrid PoW/PoS. In 2018, Andrey Sabelnikov teamed up with Pavel Nikienkov to co-found the project and launch its mainnet in mid-2019.
In March 2024, Zano implemented the Zarcanum hard fork at block height 2,555,000, marking a pivotal moment. Introducing Confidential Assets and the world's first Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism with hidden amounts, Zarcanum transitioned Zano from a single-asset blockchain to a multi-asset decentralized ecosystem.
In February 2026, Confidential Layer went live, establishing the first decentralized, non-custodial bridge connecting Bitcoin, EVM chains, Solana, and privacy blockchains. The bridge uses threshold signatures based on Shamir's shared secret with 66% validator consensus.
Through early 2026, Gateway Addresses, the centerpiece of Hard Fork 6, were completed and deployed on testnet. Targeted for Q2 2026, Hard Fork 6 enables trustless, non-custodial bridging of native ZANO and Confidential Assets out to EVM, Solana, and TON, replacing the older custodial wZANO setup with protocol-level locking and minting backed 1:1. Hard Fork 7, bringing full Proof-of-Stake, is set to follow.
🔵 Ecosystem Narrative
Zano's ecosystem is built on one principle: privacy isn't a feature you bolt on. It's a foundation you build everything else upon. Every component in the ecosystem inherits the same protocol-level confidentiality.
Key dynamics include:
➛ Zarcanum is the world's first Proof of Stake scheme with hidden amounts. Stakers secure the network without revealing their balances. No other PoS chain can make this claim.
➛ Confidential Assets let anyone issue privacy tokens on the Zano chain, with the same protections as native ZANO: hidden addresses and hidden amounts. Private stablecoins like Freedom Dollar (fUSD) and a private version of DAI already run on Zano.
➛ Ionic Swaps improve on atomic swaps by enabling peer-to-peer asset exchange with full privacy. Neither party reveals amounts or asset types during the swap.
➛ Confidential Layer and Bridgeless enable direct asset transfers between Bitcoin, EVM chains, Solana, TON, and Zano. Powered by threshold signatures with no single validator controlling a transfer. Wrap BTC or ETH into Zano-level privacy without a centralized custodian.
➛ Gateway Addresses (Hard Fork 6) introduce an account-based address type purpose-built for exchanges, bridges, and DEXes, while standard Zano wallets stay fully private. This is the infrastructure that could finally bring ZANO to tier-1 exchanges and DeFi liquidity pools.
➛ Auditable wallets allow selective transparency for legal compliance when needed, proving Zano is designed for real-world adoption, not just cypherpunk ideology.
➛ FCMP++ (upcoming) from Monero's research will replace the ring signature model with full chain membership proofs, expanding the anonymity set from 15 to millions.
⚪ Token Utilities
$ZANO powers the private economy:
➛ Private Transfers - Every transaction hides sender, receiver, amount, and asset type by default. Ring signatures + stealth addresses + range proofs.
➛ Staking (Hidden Amounts) - Stake ZANO to secure the network via the world's first PoS with hidden amounts. Earn rewards without revealing your balance.
➛ Gas Fees - Pay for all on-chain operations including Confidential Asset issuance, Ionic Swaps, and escrow contracts.
➛ Confidential Asset Issuance - Use ZANO to create privacy tokens that inherit the same protocol-level protections as native ZANO.
➛ Node Collateral - Run full nodes to support network decentralization and earn rewards.
➛ Alias Registration - Register human-readable aliases linked to stealth addresses for simplified private payments.
⚪ Key Features
➛ Privacy by Default - Every transaction hides amounts, addresses, and asset types at the protocol level. Not opt-in. Not a mixer. Enforced by mathematics.
➛ World's First Hidden-Amount PoS (Zarcanum) - Stake without revealing your balance. No other PoS blockchain has achieved this.
➛ Confidential Assets - Issue privacy tokens with the same protections as native ZANO. Private stablecoins, shielded assets, custom tokens, all confidential.
➛ Trustless Cross-Chain Bridge - Confidential Layer and Bridgeless connect Bitcoin, EVM, Solana, and TON. Gateway Addresses (HF6) make native ZANO bridging non-custodial for the first time.
➛ Ionic Swaps - Peer-to-peer asset exchange with full privacy. Neither party reveals amounts or types.
➛ CryptoNote Creator as Lead Dev - Andrey Sabelnikov wrote the code that Monero and hundreds of projects forked from. Now he's building the next evolution.
➛ No ICO, No VC, Fair Launch - Entirely community-funded and community-driven. No insider allocations.
➛ FCMP++ (Coming 2026) - Full Chain Membership Proofs expanding anonymity sets from 15 decoys to millions. The most massive privacy upgrade in the CryptoNote lineage.

🔵 Ratings
➛ Use Case: ★★★★✦ (4.5/5) - Zano is the most technically advanced privacy blockchain in existence. Protocol-level privacy on every transaction (not opt-in like Zcash). World's first hidden-amount PoS (no other chain has this). Confidential Assets for private token issuance. Ionic Swaps for private peer-to-peer exchange. And Confidential Layer bringing Zano-level privacy to Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and TON assets. With Gateway Addresses arriving in Hard Fork 6, Zano is finally addressing its biggest adoption barrier: making native ZANO accessible to exchanges and DeFi without compromising the privacy core. In a world of increasing financial surveillance, CBDCs, and debanking, protocol-enforced privacy isn't a niche. It's a necessity. The CryptoNote creator building the next evolution of his own technology is the strongest possible signal of technical legitimacy. The 0.5 deduction is because privacy coins face ongoing regulatory headwinds (delistings, potential bans), and Zano's ecosystem is still small relative to its technical ambition. Adoption needs to catch up to the technology.
➛ Tokenomics: ★★★★ (4/5) - No ICO, no VC, fair launch. ~15.3M ZANO circulating with tail emission for long-term mining security (no hard cap, but emission rate decreases over time). Hybrid PoW/PoS transitioning to full PoS via Hard Fork 7. Staking locks supply while earning rewards with hidden amounts, and the historically high staking ratio (~70% of supply) meaningfully reduces circulating liquidity. The low circulating supply compared to most privacy coins means each token carries significant network weight. The 1-point deduction is for the lack of a hard supply cap (tail emission means gradual inflation, though minimal), thin trading volume relative to market cap, and limited tier-1 exchange availability which constrains liquidity and price discovery. Gateway Addresses and wZANO could ease the listing constraint over time.
➛ Audits: ★★★★ (4/5) - Zano's security is rooted in the CryptoNote protocol, battle-tested across Monero and hundreds of forks since 2014. The lead developer literally wrote the original code. The Zarcanum hard fork introduced novel cryptographic primitives (hidden-amount PoS) designed by Valeriy Pisarkov, one of the world's foremost CryptoNote experts. The codebase is fully open-source under MIT License. Zano runs an active bug bounty program on Immunefi, signaling a proactive security posture. The Confidential Layer bridge uses threshold signatures with 66% validator consensus based on Shamir's shared secret. The network has operated since 2019 without a major exploit or fund loss. The 1-point deduction is because the novel Zarcanum cryptography and the newer bridge and Gateway Address infrastructure (2024 to 2026) haven't had years of battle-testing at scale yet.
➛ Community: ★★★★✦ (4.5/5) - Zano has one of the most genuinely dedicated, cypherpunk-aligned communities in crypto, and it understands privacy at a fundamental level. The entire community grew organically with no marketing budget, no influencer campaigns, and no exchange listing deals, just conviction in financial privacy. Active across Discord, Telegram, Matrix, and X, with a strong and growing global footprint: Zano Africa driving real-world adoption, a Monerotopia 2026 sponsorship in Mexico City, and a presence at the Libertarian National Convention. The fair launch created a base of true believers rather than mercenary capital, and that shows in how the community held through drawdowns and keeps building. Founders Andrey and Valeriy regularly appear on podcasts like Bitcoin Takeover, engaging directly with the broader privacy world, and Mr. Kwibs runs one of the most relentless growth operations of any small-cap team. Real-world spending through fUSD on Zebec cards, AEON Pay reaching 50M+ merchants, and integrations like Unstoppable Wallet show the community converting belief into usage. The 0.5 deduction is simply that mainstream awareness and trading volume remain modest relative to the project's technical significance, which is the nature of privacy-coin communities but still a ceiling on reach.
🔵 Conclusion
Zano is what happens when the man who invented privacy cryptocurrency decides his first creation wasn't good enough and builds the next generation from scratch. Andrey Sabelnikov didn't fork CryptoNote. He wrote CryptoNote. And then he spent a decade improving every aspect of it: hybrid consensus, hidden-amount staking, confidential multi-asset issuance, private peer-to-peer swaps, and a cross-chain bridge that gives Bitcoin and Ethereum the privacy they structurally cannot provide on their own.
The Zarcanum upgrade is historic. No other Proof-of-Stake blockchain can hide staking amounts. No other chain lets you issue tokens that are as private as the native coin. And with Hard Fork 6's Gateway Addresses, Zano is finally building the on-ramp that connects its world-class privacy tech to the exchanges, bridges, and DeFi protocols that drive real adoption. FCMP++, when it arrives, will expand anonymity sets from 15 to millions, the most significant privacy upgrade in the CryptoNote lineage since CryptoNote itself.
The fundamental case: financial privacy is a human right, and the window for protecting it is closing. CBDCs are coming. Surveillance is expanding. Debanking is real. And the man who created the technology that billions of dollars worth of privacy coins are built on is telling you that Zano is the next evolution. Protocol-level privacy by default. Confidential Assets. Hidden-amount staking. Trustless cross-chain bridging. All from a fair-launched, no-VC, open-source project with six people and almost no marketing budget.
If privacy matters, and the trajectory of global regulation suggests it matters more every day, then Zano is the most important project in the space that almost nobody is talking about.
