The Alephium bridge exploit is a clean reminder that most “cross-chain” systems are not moving assets across chains. They are locking value in one place, then asking an external message layer to attest that something happened somewhere else. That is the weak point. In Alephium’s case, attackers drained roughly $815k across Ethereum and BNB Chain assets while minting 13.76M unbacked wrapped ALPH. Early analysis pointed to forged guardian approvals on a private Wormhole-style bridge. Alephium later pushed back and said the issue appears to involve malicious event emission, not stolen guardian keys. But either way, the deeper problem is the same: the destination contract accepted an external representation of reality.

Whether the bridge was fooled by compromised signatures or by malicious events being observed and signed, the failure lived in the attestation layer between chains. The contract did not “know” the underlying asset state. It trusted a message saying the state was valid. That is precisely the class
