Remember that HSBC offers Tokenized Gold and that there is no need for currency to have a fixed parity for Gold for international trade to be net settled in Gold.
Henry Thornton explained that while the UK on Fiat in 1802, the bills of exchange in Pounds would be sent in Hamburg to be paid for imports. If there was a reverse flow of trade, those bills would be reused. BUT if there was no reverse flow, the merchants in Hamburg would get those bills of exchange denominated in pounds and draw the Gold on London and pocket the arbitrage since the those Pounds denominated bills of Exchange would be sold heavily against Gold in Hamburg.

Scaled tokenized gold in Hong Kong (via HSBC Gold Token and similar DLT platforms) would directly bolster efficient electronic clearing and net settlement systems, allowing rapid, low-cost transfer of gold claims without physical movement or heavy USD intermediation.

Those tokens will not be measured in HKD pegged to USD but in units.

HSBC Gold Token and similar products are denominated in physical gold units (e.g., XGT = 0.001 troy ounce of vaulted gold), not in HKD or any fiat currency. Ownership and transfers occur directly in gold quantity on the ledger.

This structure sidesteps the HKD-USD peg entirely for settlement: counterparties exchange claims to physical gold without converting through dollar-linked banking rails, enabling true net gold settlement akin to Thornton-era bill mechanisms.

In a high-tokenized-gold environment in Hong Kong, this creates a parallel, unit-based clearing system that supports Asia’s de-dollarization and energy transition goals — trade surpluses or solar-equipment flows can balance in gold units, independent of USD liquidity or peg risks.

Rogoff (ex IMF chief economist) has written a book arguing about Asia dedollarization and I am not even sure he considered alternative energies which would amplify his views.
